Update: 7/23/15
We've had Murphy now for about 5 weeks, and he has settled nicely. This week he has been soliciting play from my older small dogs, which is huge, because when he got here, he didn't really care. We walk almost every day at a local park, and he loves meeting the kids. He does some demand barking, which I've worked on, but he's not a nuisance barker at all. He has met other nice, considerate dogs and been completely fine with them.
I'm still trying to figure out what is "fun" to him. He will fetch and play ball and lie in the kiddie pool, but he seems to want something else. He enjoys walks, and LOVES to ride in the car - he isn't an obnoxious passenger who jumps back and forth, or sticks his head out the window. He either lies quietly or sits up and just watches the scenery. He loves to be with his humans, settles nicely for the evening and just hangs out on the couch or floor!
Murphy is a handsome, 4 year old, neutered black Lab mix weighing
in at 75 lbs. He is ALL lab in personality. He came to LEARN as a stray.
He's housebroken, knows some commands, including sit and shake (when he wants). He's not a barker. He is crate-trained and doesn't say a peep when crated. He rides wonderfully in the car. He does pull a bit on leash.
He loves squeaky toys! He could play and squeak ALL afternoon. He also likes to lay in the kiddie pool filled with water.
He is always happy, and wagging his tail no matter were he is. We had some pretty bad storms the day he came to our house, and he wasn't bothered by them at all. Murphy loves my boys, ages 17 & 20 and will seek out their attention, and even lie by them while they're playing video games.
Murphy needs an active family; he isn't happy lying around all day. He's probably a 6-7+ on the Labbie activity scale (1 being your couch potato, and 10 being a dog that has to be run EVERY day). I have a fenced yard, but it's not required for his forever home.
When he hears our Guinea Pig squeak he gets very excited. So small animals may be an issue. It is unknown how he is with cats. I do have 2 small dogs, he has stepped on them, not making them very happy, so they nip back at his feet, which has caused some scuffles. But they do all lay together, and hang out with no problems.
My foster mom thinks, I will do fine with another easy going dog, male or female – no bossy or dominate dogs are recommended.
