Maggie recently attended her final post op surgery appointment and received the all clear!  The surgeon advised her knee has healed perfectly and she has made a beautiful recovery.

That said, Maggie doesn't have great hips.  She is fine with them as they are but their design gives her a hop-along gait and awkward style of lying down.  Maggie would do best in a home with limited stairs.

Maggie is a lovely companion as she will hang with you anywhere; the couch, the deck, or at camp.  She likes to do a little exploring and then take a break.  She is a bit of an 8 year-old trapped in an 80 year-olds body.  Maggie loves to go for walks but power walking and distance aren't going to be her thing.  It's a bit of a leisurely saunter, unless you're leaving the vets office...she then has a new found energy and determination to get OUT!  Walking keeps the hips lubricated and are better for her than a sedentary life.  Swimming would be a good option for her to build strength with no impact on her joints.  Due to her surgery, we haven't had the opportunity to test out her doggie paddling skills.

Much like her foster parents, Maggie loves food.  As she won't be getting any HIIT trainings in due to the hips, food and treats will need to be managed so she doesn't gain too much weight.  A high quality food, fish oil, and glucosamine will be important for Maggie.

When Maggie wants attention, she will present her paw to you.  She is a good listener and likes having someone talk to her.  Maggie will make room for you on her dog bed so you can cuddle.  She has numerous dog beds to choose from but is fond of the thick, orthopedic bed that is firm but cushy.  Clearly a Princess in a former life, she likes the finer things life has to offer!

Maggie's surgery went well and she was the best patient ever.  She never cried or seemed to be in pain.  The doctors were awesome and provided a good combination of medication to keep her comfortable post-surgery.  We are about 3-weeks out and last week the doctors signed off on her to begin rehab.  That seems to be going well for her.  We are headed in the right direction and she is ready to do more as evidenced by her displeasure with the bunny in the middle of the backyard and her not being able to chase as she is still taken out on leash.  Soon enough, Maggie!

A little more about Maggie.  She loves to sprawl out on the couch (although not right now as she is banned from couch surfing. There is a barrier gate blocking the couches so she can't jump up.)  If she can't lounge on the couch, she likes a cushy dog bed or blankets.  We lay with her on the floor as Maggie likes to cuddle although it did take a little time to warm up to us.  Now she can't get enough love!

As Maggie's injury occurred less than 16 hours into her arrival at our house, we don't have a true gauge on some things Maggie.  Her personality has flourished over time with us and she is just a super sweet girl.

Maggie has a little separation anxiety.  She seems to recognize when we are leaving for work and that is not an issue.  If we are going to work in the yard or sit on the patio, she will bark until she gets to join you.  Then she is perfectly happy and settles in.  She is a bit spoiled as we bring her dog bed out so she has a soft spot to lay.

As a result of Maggie's knee injury, she has always slept on the floor.  She does look longingly at the bed and I think would really enjoy sleeping with someone in her furever family.  Break out the ear plugs, this girl puts a lumberjack to shame the way she can saw logs.  It seems to be better since she has lost a couple pounds.  Some of her pain meds may have also attributed to her ability to make the floor vibrate.

Maggie had a few extra pounds when she came to us.  With a better diet she has lost a few pounds.  The bad gam has prevented the start of an exercise program we were hoping to incorporate to her weight loss.  As we are now in rehab, we can start getting her out for very short walks that will increasingly progress in length and time.  Maggie's back end was a little weak even before her knee injury.  I think she would love a walk or two a day but they would need to be short, maybe a mile or two.  We don't know if she can, or likes to swim.  If she does, that would be an excellent source of exercise as it won't impact her backend or knees.

Maggie has two foster brothers, a lab and puggle.  She has initiated some play with the lab and tried to join in to the ball games with the puggle  Maggie likes to carry a giant kong around and enjoys chomping on a good squeaky toy.

More Maggie updates coming soon!

6/8/2021 Maggie checking in with  an update.  I had to go to the vet today because I have been favoring my back leg.  It turns out I have something called a torn ACL and meniscus!

I guess this means that I will be having something called TPLO surgery very soon.  I'm told this is a very expensive surgery with a long rehab time, so I will be here for a while, but I will be as good as new once I am done with PT.  Please, please, please consider helping with the cost of the surgery and PT, if you can. Many Labbie kisses!

Hi Everyone!  My name is Maggie and I am about 8 years old.  I came to L.E.A.R.N. about a week ago and I am still settling in.  I have been to the vet because I have some pretty bad allergies and I needed some meds for my hips. Otherwise I am healthy and up to date on everything.

I am a super sweet girl that isn't overly excited by a lot but will come to you for pets.  I get along with other dogs, was respectful to the cats I have met and I used to live with a couple of kids.

My foster mom is still getting to know me and will be posting an update soon but I wanted to let you know that I am here.  If you would like to meet me please let L.E.A.R.N. know!
