UPDATE!   UPDATE!

Well we had excellent news from the vet! Murphy's fecal came back negative for the flukes and the new RADs show his lungs have shown great improvement!! So no CT scan necessary and the nodule on his rib is breaking up, so they ruled out cancer! Such a relief! We're so happy for this sweet guy!

After a couple of weeks with Murphy, we have come to the conclusion he is one of the sweetest dogs we have ever fostered. He is a gentle soul and just wants to be with you. As long as you pet him he will just sit there and soak up the love. Even after what appears to be a rough life, he's very easy going and loves everyone and everything. He gets along incredibly well with other dogs, even if they bark or snap at him. He does get excited on the leash when he sees another dog but once he meets them he is very gentle. He has no idea what to do with toys or balls, but he is slightly interested in the red ball with the squeaker.

Now for the health news.

Murphy is a bit older than the shelter vet thought he was. I suspect it's because his front teeth are sparkling white and look like a three year old's, but as you look closer at the molars, he has some tarter, so they think he is more like six or seven.

Also, he tested positive for something called lung Fluke. They are parasites that dogs get from either eating crawfish, or eating an animal that ate a crawfish. We immediately put him on a wormer that was to take care of that, but after two weeks, he still tested positive in a stool sample. So now we have to get him on another medication that is extremely expensive and needs to be injected three times a day for three days! Poor guy.

Lastly, when the vet did another x-ray of his lungs yesterday, she saw a nodule on one of his ribs. We are hoping it is from whatever trauma he has been through, or somehow associated with the flukes, but they can't rule out cancer either. He will need a CT scan that we hope can rule out cancer. We can't do the scan until his lungs are clear of the flukes, so that will be in the next week or two....we hope.

Please keep all paws crossed for a healthy outcome for Murphy. He deserves to finally have a good life.

On Hold!

This is Murphy. He is a gorgeous and very friendly male yellow/white Lab. Possibly mixed with something, but very Labby looking and has a very Labby personality. He was found in southern Illinois near the Kentucky border and after taking him to the vet, we found he has about 14 tiny little buckshot pellets under the skin on his left side! The tiny little white dots on the X-Ray are the pellets. He clearly was not well cared for, but you would never know it from how absolutely loving he is. He just melts into you when you pet him, and he is getting very used to living in a warm, dry foster home.

We have only had him for one day, so he is on hold until we get to know him a bit better. He also needs to be neutered.

We'll keep you posted on this sweet boy.
