2/29/20 Medical Hold--Update

Hi everyone! Thanks to all of the great care by my amazing veterinary team and my foster family and all of you who have been sending positive vibes and prayers my way, I have fully recovered from the surgery on my right front paw. It took a bit longer to heal because of the awful infection that set in, but I've overcome that as well. Whew! I've even gained about 8 lbs. thanks to all the yummy clean protein and veggies my foster momma makes for me every day.

So, the good news is I am now in excellent overall health--and ready to begin chemo treatments on Monday, March 2nd to confront the bad news: the biopsy results from the nasty tumor show that I have melanoma cancer. I will need chemo 3x/week for 6 months. This treatment will be expensive--about $3500, but a very generous LEARN family has already donated $1500 toward my chemo, and my foster family will pay for all the monthly blood work I will need as I go through chemo. I'm hoping you'll find it in your hearts to contribute to my chemo treatment. I want nothing more than a good chance to live a long, wonderful life.

My foster momma tells me I'm a fighter with a strong spirit and grace and poise to match! Thank you for keeping me in your hearts and contributing to my care! I appreciate it more than you'll ever know.

Love, Eliza

1/20/20 Medical Hold

Hello everyone! My name is ELIZA, but everyone calls me “Sweet Eliza” because they tell me I am as sweet as can be. I am around 8 years old and am a black Lab/border collie mix on the smaller side. I have only been with my foster family since January 20, and goodness gracious, so much has happened in that short period of time! Before the good people of LEARN could help me, I had to sit in a shelter on a two-week stray hold, despite the fact that I had a horrible tumor on my front  right paw, which had been neglected for so long that it ruptured and ate away the bones in one of my toes. I had to figure out a way to walk with this pain.

On Day 1 with my foster family, I showed them my silly, playful side and became immediate pals with my foster sister, a black Lab by the name of Indy. She and I loved to play tug of war, and I showed her how to POUNCE on toys to make them squeak. Boy, is that ever fun.

Then, on Day 2, I had surgery to remove the nasty, ruptured tumor on my paw, as well as what was left of one of my toes. Since then, I have not been feeling so well. Everyone is taking such great care of me, but because my tumor had been neglected for so long by the humans in my past, it was rotten (literally) and infected, and despite antibiotics, I came down with a very high temperature (104.6), stopped eating, and lost interest in everything. I almost gave up.

My foster mom and dad raced me back to the vet clinic, and my AMAZING, dedicated team of vets are working hard to get to the bottom of everything. We are still waiting for the biopsy and culture results to come back, so we can pinpoint my treatment even more accurately. The past few days have been what my foster mom calls a “rollercoaster” because one day I eat a little better, then the next day I turn my nose up at anything and everything. I’m not being difficult; I’m just telling them that I don’t feel well. My foster siblings, Indy and Vegas, are my guardian angels, watching over me.

We now visit the vet clinic every single day for continuing tests, such as keeping an eye on my blood work, and so I can get more fluids. Also, I need a daily bandage change, which my foster mom and dad could and would do, but my vet team wants to see the progress of my recovering paw and the sutures. Needless to say, because of these setbacks since surgery, my recovery will take a bit longer than expected.

All of this great care, the surgery, and daily visits to the vet clinic and tests are adding up money-wise. I don’t know what money is, but everyone tells me I am worth every cent! I am REALLY hoping you will will consider contributing to help pay for all these costs. Thank you all from the bottom of my grateful heart!

Love, Sweet Eliza
